Janesville police say they want to keep the holiday season from becoming a time of tragedy.

For the next week, patrol officers will be out in force as part of a statewide "Booze and Belts" traffic safety campaign. Deputy Police Chief John Olsen says the goal is not to write more seat belt enforcement tickets, or make more drunken driving arrests, but to simply save lives and prevent injury. To highlight the problem, Olsen points to the more than 100,000 convictions last year for failure to fasten safety belts. and 45,000 drunken driving convictions.

The enhanced enforcement is scheduled to last through the 18th.
