— This weekend, the road to Bethlehem will start in Janesville.

More specifically, it will start at New Life Assembly of God, 2416 North Wright Road.

From Friday to Sunday, the church is once again staging "The Road to Bethlehem," an event dramatizing Mary and Joseph's journey to Bethlehem.

The event consists of a tour through eight rooms of the church, each a stage in the journey, explained the Jason Herzog, New Life's music minister.

Visitors are in the middle of the action at a marketplace, are present at Herod's palace and are there when Mary meets with her cousin, Elizabeth.

The final section of the tour will be with the shepherds as they follow the star to the baby in the manger.

The goal is to make the Bible come alive, Herzog said.

"This event makes the story more real," he said. "This really happened, it's not just a fable or a story."

Last year, about 900 people attended the event.

This year, the church strongly recommends that people make reservations for the free event either by phone at (608) 756-4175 or via the web site, nlag.net

Walk-ins are accepted, but many of the popular time slots are already full.
