— Bolstered by the return of two state champions, Janesville Craig High School’s gymnastics team is gearing up for another successful season.

The Cougars, who open the season tomorrow night at home against defending Big Eight Conference champion Middleton, have an abundance of talent on the roster.

Heading the list is junior Becky Schneider and senior Sara Ennocenti. Schneider became the first Janesville gymnast to win the Division 1 all-around title at last year’s WIAA state meet, while Ennocenti won the vault.

“That’s a pretty good place to start,” Craig coach Jean Welch said of Schneider and Ennocenti. “We’re pretty excited about the possibilities for this team, and it starts with those two.

“The kids did quite a bit of work in the off-season. They came into the first day of practice ready to go and looking forward to a good season.”

Schneider scored a 36.867 to win last year’s all-around title at state. She will compete in all four events again this season, along with Ennocenti, sophomore Ashley Pohlman and freshman Courtney Pohlman.

Ennocenti won last year’s state title on vault with a score of 9.483, and will be joined on vault by junior Nikki Glowacki, and possibly freshmen Michelle Cagney and Sarah Holford.

Sophomore Ashley McGoey is also expected to be a big part of the Cougar varsity lineup but is battling a shoulder injury which will keep her sidelined early on.

“Our goal as a team is to keep building,” said Welch, who is beginning her 22nd year as Craig’s coach. “We’re hosting the sectional, and I would like to think we could have a good chance of qualifying the team for state.

“We’re battling some injuries right now, but once we get to full strength, we should have a good year.”

The Cougars, who were second in Big Eight duals last season to Middleton, will get a crack at the Cardinals in the season-opener.

“Middleton’s always good,” Welch said. “But because of our injuries and the fact that it’s the first meet of the season, I’m not sure quite what to expect. I think we’re ready, though.”
