Edgerton rolls to victory in league opener, other scores

Edgerton High’s bid to move up from last year’s second-place finish in the Rock Valley North girls basketball race got off to fast start Tuesday night.


Whitney Oren and Meggie Schmidt provided the 1-2 punch as the Crimson Tide


(2-0) jumped to a 18-7 lead in the first quarter and won its conference opener, 52-34, at Jefferson.


Schmidt had nine points, and Oren had five in the big first quarter. After the Eagles pulled within 26-20 by halftime, Edgerton dominated the second half, with Schmidt scoring five points and Oren adding four in a 9-2 fourth quarter that sealed the victory.


Oren finished with a career-high 21 points, and Schmidt had 19. Kristin Wagner had three three-point goals in scoring nine points for Jefferson (0-2), which also got nine from Danielle Janney.

Alicia Oleson scored 12 points, and Caitlin Dolan added 10 for the Trojans (2-0), who overcame a 10-8 deficit in a 19-9 second quarter.


Julia Shelbourn led the Whippets (1-1) with 14 points.

Kaitlyn Eversoll had 18 points to lead McFarland, while Mallory Thalen paced Evansville (0-3, 0-1) with nine points.

Brittani Isham scored six of her 18 points in the final quarter when the Chiefs (1-1) outscored Parkview 13-8. Courtney Spangler added 15 points, and Jennifer Petkoff added 12.


Parkview’s Melissa Harnack had 18 points, and Stephanie Aasen contributed 14, but the Vikings fell to 0-3.

Eagle 25—Olivia Nickel led the way with 16 points as Clinton (3-1) domianted visiting Palmyra-Eagle (0-2) in a Rock Valley South opener.


The Cougars led 19-7 after the first quarter and 30-15 at halftime, while holding the Panthers to single digits in every period.
