The stage is set for an early-season showdown in Big Eight boys basketball.


Sun Prairie, picked to battle defending co-champion Madison Memorial for the title, celebrated the first game in its new high school gymnasium by rolling over Madison La Follette, 72-42, in a conference opener Thursday night.


Meanwhile, Memorial took to the road and rambled to a 80-51 win at Verona.


That set up a battle between Sun Prairie and the Spartans on Saturday night at Memorial.


Sun Prairie, 2-0 overall, played without 6-3 senior standout Jordan Noskowiak, who was recovering from the flu in preparation for Saturday’s big game.


Joran Schaffner led Sun Prairie with 22 points, and Chris Hawkins and Nick Fuller each scored 12. Matt Hunter had 14 for La Follette (0-2).

-- Memorial 80, Verona 51—Junior Lomomba led the way with 25 points at Madison Memorial (2-0) began its drive for another Big Eight title by burying the host Wildcats (0-2).


Bredan Ortiz, a 5-11 sophomore, added 20 points for the Spartans, who were WIAA Division 1 state runners-up last season. Tre Burnett added 17 to the winning total.

The Cardinals overcame a six-point first-quarter deficit by outscoring the Regents, 25-11, in the second quarter.


Kwame Latimer led West with 15 points.
