— Small and quick won over big and tall Thursday night.

Madison East, with one starter above the 6-foot mark, wreaked havoc on visiting Janesville Parker, forcing 25 turnovers and burying nine three-pointers to pull away for a 77-55 victory in a Big Eight Conference boys basketball opener.

Point guard Nimrod Hilliard, a University of South Dakota recruit, led the way for the defending co-champion Purgolders with 20 of his 31 points in the second half.

“We got into playing their game,” Parker High coach Ryan Masterson said of the physical battle that left the Vikings at 1-1 and lifted East to 2-0. “I don’t think we did a real good job of being strong with the ball. We tried to dribble too much, but we’ll learn from this.”

Utilizing its full-court press, East took advantage of three Parker turnovers in the opening three minutes and raced to an 18-3 lead. Parker cut the deficit to 21-16 on Erik Albeck’s lay-up, behind six points from Decker Thompson to spark the 13-3 run.

But that was as close as the Vikings got.

“Their guards played very well,” Masterson said. “We missed some shots early that could have made a difference.”

Creed Knutson led Parker with 15 points, while Thompson finished with 10.

Kyle Schroeder’s jumper with a minute left in the first half cut the East lead to 36-26, but Jermel McLin and Rudy Bentley sandwiched three-pointers around a Knutson dunk to push the Purgolders’ lead to 44-29 to open the second half.

After three Parker free throws, Speedy Amara added another three-pointer from the corner for 47-34 lead before Hilliard took over in the final quarter with 13 of East’s 17 points.

“They pressured us, and we started to get into a running game with them instead of setting up our offense,” Masterson said. “We had a definite advantage inside, but we didn’t get the ball in the places on the court we needed to get it.”

Bentley finished with 21 points for East, while McLin added 18.
