Janesville Craig boys sliced and diced
Unfortunately for Craig, the break didn’t help its cause.
Beloit (2-0) scored the final 13 points of the second quarter and never looked back en route to a 74-47 blitz of Craig (2-2) in a Big Eight Conference opener here Thursday night.
Dennis Crosby paced Beloit with 18 points, including four three-pointers, while Cameron Roegner and Leketreius Broomfield added 13 and 10, respectively, to lead the way to the easy victory.
“It was a buzz saw,” said Craig coach Mike Miller, whose team surrendered 11 Purple Knight three-pointers. “They had a bunch of guys hit three-pointers, and when you’re that quick and you shoot the ball that way, it’s going to be tough to beat.”
The torrid Purple Knight shooting also impressed Beloit coach Jay Bryant.
“Crosby was on, and Cameron (Roegner) hit a couple three-pointers, and Ahmad (Shamsid-Dean) hit a couple, so it was pick your poison,” Bryant said.
Beloit’s poisonous venom started on the defensive end midway through the second period. After the Cougars opened the quarter with an 8-3 run to draw even at 20-20, the Purple Knights held Craig scoreless for the final 5:03 of the half and built 33-20 advantage.
“From about the four minutes left in the first half, I thought we played great defense,” Bryant said.
Crosby took over from there, draining three three-pointers in the third quarter to help push the lead to 52-32. Beloit extended the lead to 30 in the third quarter.
“In the second half we didn’t shoot very well,” Miller said. “We went to the free-throw line 32 times and made 19. That’s not good enough. When you get to the line, you have to capitalize.
Craig senior guard Cody Dare capitalized on his jumpers in the first quarter. He scored eight of the Cougars’ first 12 points to help Craig draw to within 17-12 by the end of the first quarter.
Dare paced the Cougars with 17 points, while Brett Pickarts added 12.
Consecutive baskets from Pickarts and Myles Johnson knotted the game at 20-20 before the Purple Knights swiftly slammed the door on Craig the rest of the way.
“This was actually a good game for us because the Big Eight Conference is a lot like this— very physical and quick,” Miller said. “So this is something we have to get better at if we want to compete.”
