McGowan helps Jefferson Eagles soar, other scores

Max McGowan hit two free throws with eight seconds left to help Jefferson High hold off visiting Edgerton, 41-37, in a Rock Valley North boys basketball opener Tuesday night.


Matt Vogel’s two free throws put the Eagles up 37-35. McGowan finished with 14 points as Jefferson went to 2-1 overall.


Three players scored nine points for the Crimson Tide (0-2), which never led after the first quarter.


Edgerton tied the game several times, including at 35-35 early in the fourth quarter. But the Crimson Tide then went scoreless for about a five-minute stretch.

-- McFarland 70, Evansville 39—Visiting McFarland outscored Evansville 44-14 in the second half to pull away in a Rock Valley North opener.


Nik Ewelt scored 12 points, while Brett Kaether and James Runde each had 11 for McFarland.


Adam Stamm led the Blue Devils (1-1, 1-0) with 12 points.


Evansville led by six points after the first quarter, but the Spartans began to roll in the second quarter. The visitors led by one at halftime, and then took off in the second half.

-- Clinton 65, Palmyra-Eagle 44—The Cougars built a 34-18 lead by halftime and cruised past visiting Palmyra-Eagle in a Rock Valley South opener.


Justin Langley had 14 points, while Alec Mabie added 10 for Clinton. Cody Risseeuw added seven points and 11 rebounds.


Clinton coach Denny Morris credited a full-court press for helping his team outscore the Panthers, 17-5, in the second quarter.


Kevin McGivern had 16 points and Shane Houk added 12 for Palmyra-Eagle.

-- Big Foot 44, Parkview 34—Walworth Big Foot (1-1) overtook Parkview (1-1) in a 16-6 fourth quarter to win a Rock Valley South opener at Orfordville.


Mike Kunes made all six of his free throws, and Kenneth Walker also scored six points to lead the winning rally as the defending champion Chiefs gained their first victory under first-year coach Adam Bakken.


Kunes, a 6-3 senior, finished with 10 points to pace Big Foot. Parkview’s Jameson Lavery was the game leader with 11.

With his team trailing 21-17 after the first quarter, J.J. Panoske scored 10 of his game-high leading 35 points in the second period to give the Cardinals a 31-30 halftime lead.


Jacob Somers scored 14 points for Turner. Carson Scheidegger scored 13 points for Brodhead.
