Complaint: Shooting arose from drug deal
ELKHORN A drug deal that spun into a violent armed robbery led to the Aug. 5 shooting of a 20-year old Lake Geneva man in the lower back, according to criminal complaints filed Monday in Walworth County Court.
Large cash bails were set for the two area men accused of being involved in the robbery and shooting. The victim, Eric Grethe, was treated at an area hospital and was in Judge John Race’s court for Monday’s proceedings.
Just moments after being shot, Grethe chased the gunman until the painful, small-caliber wound to his lower back led him to collapse, according to a complaint. Grethe then called 911.
Meanwhile, the fleeing gunman fell into roadside bushes to avoid being struck by Grethe’s unattended and rolling vehicle where the robbery and shooting had occurred, according to a complaint.
Nathan N. Williams, 28, of Delavan was charged with robbing and shooting Grethe in Walworth Township.
Corey D. Moore-Morrison, 18, was named as Williams’ accomplice.
Both men were charged with armed robbery and intending to sell marijuana, both felonies. Williams faces additional felony counts of first-degree reckless injury with the use of a weapon and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.
Bail was set at $50,000 for Moore-Morrison and $100,000 for Williams.
According to Grethe’s police statement contained in the complaint:
Grethe contacted Moore-Morrison to buy a small amount of marijuana for about $60. They met 30 minutes later in Delavan and drove to a location near Doris Street and South Shore Drive while Williams drove another car behind them.
Moore-Morrison’s story disputes what Grethe claims. Moore-Morrison told police that Grethe wanted a half-pound of marijuana and was willing to pay up to $1,500.
After they stopped, Williams got into the back seat of Grethe’s car, pointed a gun at Grethe’s head and demanded money. Grethe pushed Williams arm down and struggled with the gunman. Two to three shots were fired, one striking Grethe. Moore-Morrison bailed out of the car.
During the struggle, Moore-Morrison returned to the car and grabbed the money and handed it to Williams, according to the complaint.
After Williams dodged the rolling car, he and Moore-Morrison returned to Williams’ car to flee. The two drove to the end of a dead-end street and ran into the woods when they heard police sirens, according to a complaint.
Moore-Morrison threw the gun into a canal and was captured after running in front of a searching squad car. Williams was apprehended inside a home that he had broken into, according to a complaint.
Police recovered the gun, $500 from Williams and $900 from the residential driveway where Grethe had collapsed.

why should someone buying an 8th of an ounce of marijuana be waiting for a jail sentence upon leaving the hospital after being shot? this is eric grethe by the way, legalize marijuana!! maybe incidents like this would not happen. and btw i fought that man out of my vehicle, kicked part of the cash away into a driveway, and then chased him down with the police on the phone, all AFTER the shooting

Fly... I totally agree. Had a girlfriend that flew in from Colorado for our 30+ class reunion. She and her physician chose marijuana over opiate drugs for her pain management, for a back problem. She has a certificate to grow and carry small amounts. Having back pain is something I dealt with for years. I was on Oxycontin for 6 months before I finally succumbed to major surgery. Honestly, if I could have just smoked a joint, I would not have had to deal with the side affects of Oxycontin. Barbiturates are extremely addictive... Hard to get off the addiction.
My daughter at 27 years old, had both hips replaced, then a revision just this year. I think she may be having issues getting off the pain killers now...
Just let us grow and harvest our own little stock.

$1,500 for a half pound of a plant? What would be equivalent to a half pound of a legal plant in terms of difficulty of growth/processing ect?
.
I mean a half pound of lettuce is like thirty cents. Half a pound of oregano would be what - two bucks?

2dognight: Recovery does happen. More often than most people realize. In fact, Chuck Negron (one of the founders "Three Dog Night") has been in recovery for nearly 20 years. Before that, he'd quit treatment more than 30 times.

Go ahead and legalize drugs just sterilize any person testing positive for drugs.
The kids are the victims in this situtation.
Just like the kids are the ones who suffer from alcohol abuse. Always the kids.
Then history repeats it self and there is such pain. Very sad.

fly_on_the_wall, I wouldn't jump to that conclusion that it wouldn't have been reported. I remember an article a few weeks ago, right here in the Gazette, about a robbery of drug money. The buyers reported it that someone robbed their drug money.

It looks to me like marijuana made these three guys self-destruct.
I'm sure I've read comments from some pro-marijuana posters that marijuana users are too mellow to be violent, and that marijuana dealers don't use guns. I guess you can't believe everything you read.

Just keep scooping them up... I liked a previous post on another story, to just sentence them ALL to the old GM plant. Lock the doors, give them all the drugs they can consume and let them self-destruct!
Losers!
