Employees thwart burglary attempt in Janesville

— The early bird catches the worm and the burglars.

At 4:40 a.m. Saturday, a group of employees arriving at Alter Recycling, 1753 Beloit Ave., discovered five males attempting to rob the business, according to a news release from the Janesville Police Department.


The suspects were inside and outside the building, and were allegedly in the process of removing catalytic converters and aluminum rims.


Employees detained James E. Butler, 17, of Janesville, and police later arrested him on charges of party to the crime of burglary, and two counts of theft and criminal trespass.


Four other suspects fled the scene on foot. Janesville Police caught three, and the fourth is still at large.


Arrested were:


Dustin M. Becker, 22, Janesville charges of party to the crime of burglary and two counts of theft and criminal trespass.


Joseph L. Jordan, 20, Janesville on charges of burglary and two counts of criminal trespass and theft.


A 16-year-old Janesville male on charges of party to the crime of burglary, theft and two counts of theft and criminal trespass.


All four suspects admitted their involvement in Saturday’s crime, and said it was their second trip to the business, according to the news release.


The suspects also admitted to stealing from the business on Wednesday. Reported taken in that incident were recyclables valued at $550.


On Saturday, recyclables valued at $3,500 were reported stolen.
