Illinois champs jolt Evansville; Edgerton, Jefferson, McFarland win openers

Stillman Valley High School’s defending Illinois Class 3A state champions used their typical ground game to spoil visiting Evanville’s football season opener Friday night.


The Cardinals rushed for 338 yards in rolling over the Blue Devils, 46-12, in inter-state nonconference action.


Adam Cox led a balanced rushing attack with 94 yards to spark Stillman Valley, which overcame a 6-0 first-quarter deficit.


Evansville scored first on Dalton Sindelbach’s 5-yard run in the first quarter, but the Cardinals retaliated with 40 straight points. Casey Moseley had a 23-yard touchdown run for the Blue Devils in the fourth quarter.,

n Jefferson 46, Union Grove 43—Nate Keller set a Jefferson school record by rushing for 343 yards as the defending Rock Valley North co-champions outlasted host Union Grove in a nonconference opener.


Keller scored five touchdowns on runs covering 73, 64, 40, 70 and 18 yards. The Eagles rushed for 495 yards on 51 carries.

n Edgerton 39, Belleville/Albany 20—Tyler Oren returned an interception 40 yards for a touchdown, and Tyler Dobratz followed with a 32-yard scoring return of a blocked punt to help visiting Edgerton defeat Belleville/Albany in a nonconference opener.


The teams were tied at 7-7 just three minutes into the game. Dobratz caught a 76-yard pass from Collin Gregory for the Crimson Tide’s first score.


Dobratz caught five passes for 126 yards. He also blocked a punt, picked it up and returned it for the TD that gave Edgerton a 25-14 lead.

Jordan Smith put the Spartans ahead for good on a 35-yard touchdown run with 8:28 left in the first quarter. Jacob Peeters then caught two touchdown passes from Tyler Wedel to put McFarland out of reach.
