Janesville Craig High got off to a fast start on its cross country season Thursday.

The Cougars swept the top six spots to win the boys portion of the season-opening Milton Rock Run, while the girls took five of the top seven spots to win the girls division of the event.

“It’s a great start to the season,” said Craig coach Brian Lawton. “It gives us a good starting point. We have a 25-team meet at Verona next Saturday (Sept. 4), and it’s nice to have a meet and have success.”

Tommy Meister dominated the boys 5,000-meter race, winning by 41 seconds over teammate Spencer Hrycay in 16:43.

Joe Sarow was third in 17:47.

Parker finished second, with Dane Tyler posting the Vikings’ fastest time in 18:42. He finished seventh.

Milton was third, with John Wells running the Red Hawks’ best time of 18:44.

Michaela Holzhuter and Rachel Gilmore finished 1-2 in the girls race to give the Cougars first place.

Holzhuter, a junior who is out for cross country for the first time, won in 16:26. Gilmore second in 16:39.

Parker was second, with Brooke King leading the Vikings with a fifth-place finish in 17:07.

Milton was third, as Mandi Speer finished third in 16:50.
