Craig wins second straight match to open season

— Janesville Craig’s girls tennis team remained unbeaten in Big Eight Conference dual meets with a 5-2 win over Madison Memorial here Thursday at Palmer Park.

Craig High (2-0), led by No. 1 singles player Kelly Collins, won three of four singles matches.

“We played very well as a team today,” Craig coach Bill Peyer said. “I thought Kelly Collins played a good match at No. 1 against a very good opponent.”

Kaylee Russing and Courtney Spiegler also won at singles for the Cougars, while the doubles team of Ciarra Sroda and Minalza Shahlapour, and Devin Timblin and Brianna Lane.

Craig High will play at Middleton on Tuesday.

Junior varsity—Craig 4, Memorial 3.

-- Parker 5, Verona 2—Janesville Parker improved to 1-1 in the Big Eight with a win over host Verona.

Maddie Theisen and Kristin Zeilinger improved to 7-0 for the Vikings at No. 1 doubles with a win, while sisters Becky and Teri Harmata improved to 6-1 with wins at No. 3 and No. 4 singles, respectively.

“I thought it would be close, so to win 5-2 says a lot a lot about these girls,” Parker coach Justin Long said. “It was a great showing for us.”

Lauren Brooks won for Parker at No. 2 singles, while Melanie Whitescarver and Gretchen Genrich won at No. 3 doubles.

Parker hosts a six-team invitational on Saturday that also includes Oregon, Sauk Prairie, Whitefish Bay Dominican, Kettle Moraine and Delavan-Darien.
