— The accident that caused a power outage and evacuated six homes on Monday happened after the driver had a medical episode and lost consciousness, according to the accident report.

According to the report:

Phillip G. Bothun, 19, of 2319 Palomino Drive, Janesville, was driving a Jeep eastbound on West Court Street just after 5 p.m. when he lost consciousness, the report said. A passenger, Logan T. Vechinsky, 20, of 3331 Secretariat Drive, Janesville, tried to steer and slow the Jeep, but Bothunís leg was locked against the gas pedal.

Vechinsky steered the Jeep into a power pole to avoid a rear-end collision. The Jeep careened off the pole before hitting the side of the house at 621 W. Court St.

Bothun suffered minor injuries and was listed in good condition Tuesday morning at Mercy Hospital.

The accident broke off the power pole, and six homes were evacuated for about two hours because of danger from live wires on the ground, a fire department spokesman said.

Some residences were left without power, and some streets were closed to allow utility crews to work.

The American Red Cross was on hand to assist the evacuees.
