Janesville Craig Cougars win title in opener

— Janesville Craig High School won the 13-team Craig Invitational to open the 2010 girls tennis season Tuesday at Palmer Park.

The Cougars posted a 5-0 record with victories over Monroe, Monona Grove, Lake Geneva Badger, Burlington and Big Foot/Williams Bay.


Meanwhile, Janesville Parker finished 4-1 and tied for second with Monroe.


Courtney Spiegler, the Cougars’ No. 4 singles player, posted a 5-0 record, while Sarah Gray was 4-1 at No. 3 singles. Craig’s Kelly Collins was 2-3 at No. 1 and Kaylee Rossing was 3-2 at No. 2 singles


Craig’s No. 1 doubles team of Maggie Bolton and Taylor Storbakken and No. 2 team of Cierra Sroda and Minalisa Shahlapour each posted 5-0 records. Craig’s Devon Timblin and Brianna Lane went 3-2 at No. 3 doubles.


For Parker, Emily Sodemann posted a 4-1 mark at


No. 1 singles, while Becky and Terri Harmata each went 4-1 at No. 3 and No. 4 singles.


Parker’s No. 1 doubles team of Maddie Theisen and Kristin Zielinger, and No. 2 doubles team of Kim Amundson and Danielle Boyd each posted 5-0 records. Parker’s Melanie Whitescarver and Gretchen Genrich went 3-2 at No. 3.
