Doyle to move I-90/39 project forward

— Gov. Jim Doyle will take the next step toward expansion of Interstate 90/39 between Madison and the state line by convening the transportation commission responsible for approving it.

According to Assembly Speaker Mike Sheridan’s office, Doyle said he would call a meeting of the Transportation Projects Commission, which is responsible for enumerating and prioritizing proposed projects. The commission could meet before the end of the year. The meeting would be the first time the commission has convened during Doyle’s nearly eight years in office.

Without TPC approval, the project would need to be written into the next 2011-13 biennium budget, which will be debated next year.

The expansion of I-90/39 would add a lane in both directions to aid state tourism and commerce. The Department of Transportation projects a 50 percent increase in traffic on I-90/39 by 2030.

The project would cost an estimated $1 billion and could start as early as 2015.

State Transportation Secretary Frank Busalacchi said the federal government would likely cover 40 to 50 percent of the costs. The state’s segregated transportation fund, which is comprised of fuel tax revenue and vehicle registration fees, would pay for the rest.

The state submitted an environmental assessment for the expansion to the Federal Highway Administration in June and expects a response in the next couple of weeks.

The "stimulus money" should be used to upgrade existing infrastructure. We win now and later.

But wait, we need a useless train between Mad and Mil! And guess who will be supporting that "Amtrak" style boondoggle. On top of that we will be taxed to expand 94 to 6 lanes to accommodate all that vehicle traffic that the train was supposed to reduce.

All most every farmer has signed up to set aside land and be paid not to plant anything on that land. Why because farmers are able to produce enough to support this nation and others with less acres. If every tillable land was planted the farmers would began losing there farms because the price of product would plunge down to nothing with overstock grains. Yes good for the consumers but bad for the farmer. So don't feel bad when you hear about land being sucked up by buildings and highways.

yc94, most of the expansion will take place in the median, and little will happen in the way of outward expansion. It will be a lot like the way 90/39 was expanded between the state line and Rockford. The bridges were expanded a few years ago, and virtually all the work was done between the north and southbound lanes and not on the outside.

As I stated in the first article about this it has to wait till 2015. Doyle and his buddy Sheridan and the rest of the liberal idiots took 1.3 million out of the transportation fund to fund their budget wishes. There is no money to build this now. This project did not even have a number 3 months ago. And with out a number a project does not even get looked at. Funny how this is all taking place in an election year. Funny how its Sheridan's office that has to release this. Funny how he is fighting for his worthless hide this election. There are a lot of things funny here except the job the democrats have done destroying the state.

Six lanes will forever destroy many more acres of some of the world's finest farmland. We cannot drill for farmland like we drill for other resources. We will simply have less land to grow food for more people.
