Raptors’ shutout secures playoff
Raptors’ pitchers Tom Klawitter, Brett Fredricks and Joe Shere combined on a two-hit shutout. Milton pounded out 14 hits.
“We hit the ball at good times and got the runners in,” Milton coach Doug Welch said. “We played the best game of our season against the second-place team.’’
The Raptors were 11-7 in the regular season 11-7 after starting 1-4. They finished in fourth place to earn the playoff berth.
“We went 10-3 after the slow start,” Welch said. “We made the playoffs, which was our goal from the beginning.’’
The North Division No. 4 seed Raptors travel to undefeated South Division No. 1 seed Rubicon (14-0) Saturday to open the double-elimination tournament. Milton hosts Oakfield on Sunday.
Josh Shere laced four singles in five at-bats, while teammate T.J. Klawitter had two singles and three RBIs. Matt Fredricks executed a perfect squeeze bunt to score Eric Steinke, who tripled, to give Milton a 2-0 lead in the second inning.
“In the 22 years I’ve been with the Raptors, that was the first time we ever did a squeeze bunt,” Welch said.
