— Alcohol may have played a role in a fatal traffic crash Wednesday that killed Justin L. Condon, 32, of Brodhead, according to a Rock County Sheriff's Office press release.

Rock County Deputy Corner Michelle Walworth pronounced Condon dead at the crash scene at 11:37 p.m., the release said.

The nearly head-on crash closed Highway 81, just east of South Avon Store Road in Spring Valley Township, for 3 1/2 hours. The sheriff's office requested the Wisconsin State Patrol to reconstruct the crash scene that remains under investigation.

Preliminary reports show Condon was driving a 2001 Oldsmobile Silhouette east on Highway 81 when he drove left of the centerline into oncoming westbound traffic. As Jeffrey B. Smith, 44, of Rockford, Ill., drove his 2010 Peterbilt semitrailer truck west, he noticed a vehicle in his lane of traffic traveling toward him, the report said.

According to the report, Smith braked, steered left in an attempt to avoid impact. At the same time, Condon steered the van right attempting to get back into his lane of traffic, but his car collided nearly head on into Smith's semitrailer truck, according to the release.

Upon impact, Smith's semitrailer truck traveled 50 feet south before stopping on the south shoulder of Highway 81 with the trailer blocking eastbound traffic. Condon's van spun counterclockwise traveling 45 feet west before stopping in the eastbound lane of traffic.

Condon was wearing his seat belt, the release said.

Smith was taken to Beloit Memorial Hospital, where he was treated and released for minor injuries. He, too, according to reports, was wearing his seat belt.
