— The Janesville Police and Fire Commission will be another step closer to choosing a new fire chief Thursday when they meet in closed session.

Commission chair, Leslie Brunsell, says they ended up getting 47 applications for the job. They were able to whittle that down to 16 with phone interviews, and two of those chose to withdraw their applications. The remaining 14, including four internal candidates, will be studied Thursday. Five will be picked to go through the assessment process, which is scheduled to take place in September. Brunsell says from that final five, a chief will be selected.

Janesville Fire Chief Larry Grorud has already announced he'll retire in January.
