Marling Lumber plans expansion

— Marling Lumber announced Friday it will expand its Humes Road location to include a lumberyard.

Marling HomeWorks showroom will open the lumberyard in October and plans to add new employees, said Scott Bowers, chief financial officer.

The lumberyard will make the location a one-stop destination for builders, he said. The lumberyard will have nearly everything offered at Marling's location on River Street.

Even with the economic downturn, the company wanted to invest in its future and make strategic changes, Bowers said.

The area has seen a remodeling boom despite a new construction slowdown, he said.

"We always feel like our best opportunities are in a down economy," Bowers said. "We weren't going to rest on our laurels and wait for the economy to turn around."

Marling Lumber opened its 17,000-square-foot HomeWorks showroom in July 2009 at 1123 Humes Road. The company, which was founded in 1904 in Madison, spent two years and $2 million transforming the former Wolohan Lumber operation into the showroom.

Marling Lumber will continue its lumberyard operations at its River Street location.

The company has businesses in Janesville, Madison, Waukesha, Green Bay and Edgerton. It recently moved its corporate headquarters to Janesville.

Yep, the one I applied for was inside sales.

wooooo, you don't have to work with wood to work there. Their showroom has many many products from door knobs to window screens. And for this expansion, I would think they will need material handlers, sales people, and probably clerks.

They have advertised in the Gazette for employees, I sent my resume. It is nice to see them expanding and staying in Janesville. Good job, Marling's. Hope you have a bright future here.

wooooo .... They're are jobs aren't they? Everyone complains about having no jobs but when some come along (granted probably not many) it's still not good enough. If you're looking for someone to open up shop and add 3,000 employees it's not going to happen. Every little bit counts

Best of luck to a Janesville icon. I hope they don't end up like CB&K....

To be expanding during a building recession is a hopeful sign. Either the remodeling business is good or Marling has anticipated and adjusted well to the market. Probably both. Good job.

They continue to get all of my orders correct. I really like the new showroom that has been added.

And it would be even better news if they could get orders correct.
