— Michael Gonzales provided the early firepower and clinching blow Wednesday night in another win for the Beloit Snappers.

Gonzales hit his 12th home run of the season on a second-inning shot to center field, giving the Snappers a 1-0 lead they never relinquished en route to a 7-2 victory over the Burlington Bees in Midwest League baseball at Pohlman Field.

With their third straight win and second in a four-game series with Burlington, the Snappers evened their Western Division record at 18-18 for the league’s second-half race.

After the Bees pulled within 3-2 in a two-run fifth, Beloit retaliated with Danny Rams’ RBI triple in the sixth. The Snappers put the game out of reach in a four-run seventh that featured Gonzales’ two-run double.

Beloit starter Tom Stuifbergen pitched 5 2/3 innings in extending his season record to 5-0. Despite allowing two earned runs, the 6-foot-3 right-hander maintained a 1.65 ERA.

The Snappers and Burlington play the third game of their series here at 7 tonight.
