Ferrell shoots course-record 64
JANESVILLE Brooke Ferrell put on a record-setting performance in Saturday’s first round of the Women’s Rock County Championship at Riverside Golf Course.
Thanks to eight birdies, Ferrell shot a women’s course record 7-under par 64 to grab a nine-shot lead over C.J. Enriquez.
Today’s 18-hole finale figures to be a one-horse race after Ferrell’s electrifying opening round.
“It was just one of those days where everything was on,” said the 15-year-old Ferrell, who will be a sophomore at Edgerton High School. “I think I only had 25 putts, and with the tee boxes up, I was able to hit it long and leave myself some pretty short approach shots.”
Ferrell has played the short Riverside Course many times, but never envisioned a round like Saturday’s.
“I’ve been playing pretty consistently all summer with most rounds in the 70s, but today it just took off,” Ferrell said.
“My mom (Leslie) caddied for me today and told me to try and birdie all the par 5s. Once I got my first birdie at No. 3, I had pretty good luck after that.”
Ferrell shot 32 on both nines, finishing with eight birdies and one bogey.
Enriquez, who graduated this year from Madison Edgewood and was on four Division 2 state championship teams, fired a 2-over par 73.
Donna Bailey shot 78 and is in third place, while Katie Brossard shot 80 and is in fourth, 16 shots back.
Theresa Borkenhagen shot a 91 and leads the First Flight by seven shots over Nancy Furlano and Mary Conway.
