— Janesville Craig’s softball team capped off a perfect week by slipping past Beloit Memorial in a Big Eight Conference thriller Thursday at Dawson Field.

Gabrielle Cassady had two doubles and two RBIs, and Paige Owens struck out the only batter she faced to lead the Cougars to a 6-4 win.

Craig High (11-3, 9-2) got its third Big Eight win of the week and remained in second place in the conference, one-game behind Verona.

“This was not an easy week considering the three teams we had to play,” Craig coach Dan Bayreuther said. “But we continue to get good pitching, and our hitting is starting to come around.

“Hopefully, we can keep it going.”

Craig took the lead for good with two runs in the first. Cassady’s two-run double drove in Haley Bayreuther and Leigh Grall.

The Cougars added four more in the fourth, capped off by Grall’s RBI single.

After Beloit cut the lead to two in the seventh, Owens came on to end the threat with a strikeout.

Craig plays at Madison La Follette on Tuesday.

The Vikings scored their only run in the seventh. Stephanie Miller walked, and Jackie Ludois bunted for a single.

Leah Champion bunted for another hit to load the bases, and Cierra Carney drove in Miller with a grounder.

The Vikings (0-9, 0-7) are scheduled to play at Madison West today in a makeup game.
