When a team scores three runs in an inning when it strikes out four times, things are looking good.

Janesville Craig used those three runs and four others to beat visiting Sun Prairie, 7-4, in Big Eight Conference softball action Tuesday at Dawson Field.

The victory moved the Cougars into a second-place tie with the Cardinals at 8-2.

“It was pretty much as complete a game as we’ve played,” said Craig coach Dan Bayreuther. “Sun Prairie has a nice ballclub. There’s not a senior on the team. We swung the bats a lot better than we did against Memorial and Verona.”

Haley Bayreuther led the Cougars’ 11-hit attack by going 4-for-4. Gabrielle Cassady went 3-for-3 and drove in four runs with a single, double and triple.

Cassady’s two-run double was the key hit in Craig’s three-run fifth, which put the Cougars ahead 5-1. A wild pitch on a third strike kept the inning going. Three other outs were recorded on strikeouts in the inning.

Haley Bayreuther’s RBI single, and Stephanie Perleberg’s sacrifice fly added two insurance runs in the sixth after Sun Prairie had cut the deficit to

5-4 with three runs in the top of the sixth.

Paige Weber pitched the first six innings for the Cougars, and Bailie Whittaker pitched the final inning.

The Cougars play Beloit Memorial at Dawson on Thursday.

“I’m proud of the girls for battling back in the seventh,” Parker coach Jenni Seisser said. “We just have to start stringing some hits together.

“Ashley (Ross) pitched a good game for us. And sooner or later, we’re going to win one of these close games.”

Ross struck out six and allowed only five hits.

Parker plays at Madison East on Thursday, and at Madison West in a makeup game Friday.
