— Janesville Parker’s baseball team is in a rut.

The Vikings lost their third straight Big Eight Conference game Tuesday and dropped below .500 for the first time this season.

Madison Memorial, behind a nine-run third inning, coasted to an 11-1 win over Parker at Riverside Park.

Dan Ritchie drove in four runs, and Zach Ransom threw five solid innings to lead the Spartans (6-6, 3-4).

“One bad inning. That was the ball game,” Parker High coach Brian Martin said. “We didn’t pitch well that inning. We didn’t play good defense that inning. And when we needed to answer their run with one of our own, we didn’t get the bats going.

“It’s frustrating because we’re a better team than we’ve shown the last couple games. But there’s still a lot of baseball left.”

Memorial scored an unearned run in the top of the first before Parker (4-5, 3-5) answered with a run. With one out, Kyle Johnson was hit by a pitch and advanced to third on Josh Garcia’s single. Jake Welch followed with an RBI double to tie the game.

The Spartans blew the game open in the third. The first eight batters got hits, including a three-run double by Ritchie that pushed the lead to 5-1. Memorial sent 10 batters to the plate in the third before Parker could get an out, as Viking starter Andy Kersten was roughed up for the first time this season.

“I thought Andy actually made some good pitches that inning. They just put the ball in play,” Martin said. “When a team does that, you just have to tip your hat.

“It was not Andy’s day, and I haven’t had to say that very often. But he’ll bounce back.”

Parker got eight hits off two Memorial pitchers, but also struck out 10 times. The Vikings left at least one runner on base in every inning.

The Vikings play at second-ranked Middleton on Thursday.
