Warhawks, Pointers split

— UW-Whitewater had to settle for another doubleheader split with UW-Stevens Point in Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference baseball.

The Warhawks won the opener, 8-1, but got hammered 15-9 in the nightcap.


Whitewater remains in first place in the WIAC at 15-3 and 27-4 overall. The second-place Pointers are 11-5 and trail by two games with six league games remaining.


Whitewater starter Aaron Leitner and reliever Ben Versnik combined to hold the Pointers to six hits. Whitewater ripped 11 hits off starter Scott Williams, who went the distance for Point.


In Game 2, the Pointers smacked the Warhawks with 13 runs in the eighth and ninth innings, including a nine-run rally in the ninth inning. Whitewater held a 5-2 lead after seven innings.


Whitewater used six pitchers in the ninth inning as Point sent 13 batters to the plate. Point produced five consecutive RBI singles with two outs.


Whitewater will host UW-Oshkosh in a doubleheader at 1 p.m. Wednesday.
