Big inning lifts Janesville Craig past Madison East
One inning is all it takes.
That is the slogan that Janesville Craig High’s softball team is living by.
The Cougars scored four times in the fourth inning to down visiting Madison East, 4-2, in a Big Eight Conference game. The Cougars are 5-0 in league play and 7-1 overall.
“It was déjà vu,” said Craig coach Dan Bayreuther. “Just like our game against Parker, we had one good inning.”
Gabrielle Cassady led off the big fourth inning with a walk, and Lindsay Oliver reached on an error and stole second to put runners on second and third.
Kelly Moench hit a dribbler in front of third and reached first safely to load the bases.
Erica Mortensen walked to force in the first run in the game, and Stephanie Kalish followed with a key two-run single.
Jill Blanchard drove in the final run of the inning with a ground out.
Bayreuther used three pitchers—Paige Owens, Paige Weber and Bailie Whittaker.
“That was our plan going in,” Bayreuther said. “We’re going to Madison West on Thursday, and have a doubleheader against Verona on Saturday, so we wanted them all to get some work in.”

Parker falls at La Follette
Janesville Parker High School suffered an 8-2 loss to host Madison La Follette in Big Eight softball Tuesday.
The Lancers pounded out nine hits, including four extra base hits off Parker sophomore Ashley Ross.
“Ashley didn’t pitch a bad game,” Parker coach Jenni Seisser. “She was hitting the corners, but not getting the calls.’’
A disputed double with the bases loaded gave La Follette a 4-0 lead in the second inning.
“The ball was foul, but it was called fair,” Seisser said.
Four of La Follette’s runs were unearned. The Vikings committed five errors.
Parker will host Madison Memorial on Thursday at Dawson Ball Field.
