— UW-Whitewater’s baseball team tightened its hold on first place in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference with two more wins over UW-La Crosse here Sunday.

Third-ranked Whitewater won the first game 8-6 before cruising to an 8-4 win in game two. The Warhawks are now 23-2 overall and 11-1 in the WIAC, while the Eagles fell to 8-14 overall and 1-7 in conference play. Whitewater swept back-to-back doubleheaders on Saturday and Sunday against La Crosse.

Whitewater opened up a two-game lead over UW-Stevens Point for the conference lead. Stevens Point split with UW-Superior on Sunday.

Ryan Leavitt belted a three-run homer in the top of the eighth for Whitewater in game one, while Kyle Lee and Ben Versnik combined to pitch a scoreless eighth and ninth to preserve the win. Versnik picked up his third save of the season thanks to back-to-back strikeouts in the ninth with the tying run at second base.

A five-run ninth inning proved to be the difference in game two. Jordan Stine, Rob Coe, Mike Kenseth, Nick Rechlitz and Daniel Putnam each drove in a run in the ninth as the Warhawks overcame a 4-3 deficit.

Whitewater will host UW-Oshkosh in a WIAC doubleheader Wednesday beginning at 1 p.m.
