Craig, Parker baseball split Big Eight doubleheaders
But the Cougars prevailed with a dramatic finish in the second game, winning 8-7 after falling 6-0 in the opener.
"We played real well in the second game to salvage the split," Craig coach Vic Herbst said of the Big Eight Conference matchup.
Charlie Meyer's ground-rule double that bounced over the center-field fence drove in the winning run for Craig in game two.
The Cougars (3-4 overall, 1-3 Big Eight) led most of the second game, but fell behind 7-6 in the top of the seventh when the Spartans (2-2 Big Eight) scored three runs.
In the bottom of the seventh, Craig's Jamison Henning led off with a walk and Christian DeCremer singled to right. Mitch Phillips followed with a bunt, but a high throw to third failed to get an out, loading the bases.
Tom Yaucher then grounded out to second to score one run and tie the game at 7-7, leaving runners at second and third. Meyer followed with his walk-off double.
Craig's Tyler Bloom led off the fourth inning with a home run, giving the Cougars a 4-2 lead.
In the first game, Memorial senior left-hander Zach Ransom went six innings, struck out six and didn't give up any walks.
"He was in control the entire game," Herbst said of Ransom. "Offensively we struggled against him, and we had a couple of miscues that let them get ahead early."
Craig next plays city rival Parker at 5 p.m. Tuesday at Riverside Park.

Parker, Verona split
Janesville Parker rebounded from a 9-2 first-game loss to Verona on Saturday at Riverside Park with a 7-2 victory in the second game of a Big Eight doubleheader.
"Verona's a pretty good team, and it was a pretty good split for us," said Parker coach Brian Martin. "The second game we played pretty solid."
Parker (4-2 overall, 3-2 Big Eight) and Verona (1-3 Big Eight) scored all of their runs after the third inning in both games.
In the first game, Verona rode the pitching of Ben Neumann and a five-run fifth inning.
"Their first pitcher was pretty tough and got ahead of us," Martin said of Neumann.
In game two, Parker scored two runs in the fourth, two in the fifth and three in the sixth.
Trent Kobs drove in the Vikings' first run in the fourth with a sacrifice fly, and Tanner Moe added an RBI single.
In the fifth, Hunter Marshall's bases-loaded walk scored the first run and the Vikings also scored on a passed ball.
In the sixth, Josh Garcia's two-out, two-run double drove in two runs, and Jake Welch doubled home Garcia.
Martin said pitchers Tyler Teubert, who threw the first four innings, Garcia and Kobs pitched well in the second game.
