— Janesville Craig High School’s softball team hammered defending Big Eight Conference champion Middleton 10-2 at Dawson Field on Wednesday.

The Cougars pounded out a season-high 13 hits en route to their fifth straight victory. Craig improves to 3-0 in the Big Eight and 5-1 overall.

“Middleton is a well-coached team, and we are happy to get a win, especially a 10-2 win,” Craig coach Dan Bayreuther said.

Middleton jumped to a 2-0 lead, but Craig scored six runs on five hits in the second inning to erase the deficit. The Cougars added two runs in the third for an 8-2 lead and added two runs in the sixth to complete their scoring.

Gabrielle Cassady ripped a two-out, two-run single and Lindsey Oliver hit a two-out, one-run single to key the second inning rally.

Bailie Whittaker notched two strikeouts and walked none through four innings to earn the victory. Reliever Paige Weber blanked the Cardinals the rest of the way.

Craig will face host Janesville Parker this Friday at Dawson Field.
