— Demolition work on the old county farm buildings near the Rock County Jail complex continued Tuesday. The county farm closed in 2005, and the barn, grain shed and other outbuildings have been dismantled or destroyed. The buildings’ foundations are now being removed.

Work is also underway on a new garage behind the Rock County Sheriff’s Office. The new garage will hold emergency vehicles and equipment.

The county has been demolishing the inhabitable buildings around the Rock County complex for several years. The current work will help ready the site for future jail expansion.

A new booking room, a medical facility and security updates are expected to cost $5.79 million. The renovations include the first phase of the $56.5 million jail expansion and will be paid for with county sales taxes collected in 2008 and 2009.

Other phases of the expansion remain on hold because alternative programs such as electronic monitoring have reduced the jail population, Sheriff Bob Spoden said.
