— Janesville Parker High School suffered a rocky first inning and tumbled to an 8-0 loss to Verona in a Big Eight Conference softball opener Monday at Dawson Field.

The Vikings committed three errors in the first inning as the Wildcats rolled to a 3-0 lead.

“We put ourselves in the hole and it’s hard to battle back,” Parker coach Jenny Seisser said.

Verona pounded out nine hits including a double and a home run. A pair of Verona pitchers held Parker to four hits and walked none.

“Verona is one of the top teams in the Big Eight,” Seisser said. “They are always tough.’’

Despite committing four errors, the Vikings got stellar outfield play from left fielder Jackie Ludois and Lauren Brooks, who gunned down a Verona runner at the plate from center field.

The Vikings (0-1, 0-3) will travel to Sun Prairie on Wednesday.
