Craig softball team wins third straight
Janesville Craig High School’s softball team got the Big Eight Conference season off to a rousing start Friday.
The visiting Cougars erupted for eight runs in the fifth inning en route to an 11-2 win over Beloit Memorial.
Craig (3-1, 1-0) took advantage of timely hitting and five Beloit errors in winning its third straight.
“I don’t remember the last time we won down here,” Craig coach Dan Bayreuther said of the road win. “For some reason, this has been a tough place for us to play, but we did enough today, especially in the fifth, to get the job done.”
The Cougars trailed 2-1 in the fifth before taking the lead for good. Lindsey Oliver singled in the go-ahead run, and Whitney Oliver followed with an RBI single to make it 4-2. Kelly Moench’s two-run double made it 7-2 as the Cougars banged out four hits in the inning.
Beloit, which was playing its season opener, managed only four hits off three Craig pitchers.
“All three pitchers did a nice job for us today,” Bayreuther said.
“More than anything, it was nice to finally get a game in after three days of rainouts.”
