— Not even a two-day wait could spoil the season opener for Janesville Parker High School’s baseball team.

Andy Kersten threw a complete-game five-hitter, and the Vikings banged out four doubles in a 5-0 win over Madison East in Big Eight Conference action Thursday at Riverside Park.

“The guys were itching to play,” Parker coach Brian Martin said. “So to come out and get a win, behind good pitching from Andy and flawless defense, tells me we were ready to go.

“Hopefully, this is a sign of things to come.”

Parker broke the game open with a four-run third. Tanner Moe, who had two of Parker’s eight hits, doubled with two outs to start the rally. Tyler Teubert drove in Moe with a single before the Vikings strung together three straight RBI doubles from Kyle Johnson, Matt Fiedler and Josh Garcia.

The four runs were all Kersten needed as the junior right-hander was in control. He struck out six and did not allow a runner past second base.

“I couldn’t ask for much more from Andy for the first time out,” Martin said. “He threw 96 pitches and the defense behind him was solid.”

Parker hosts Beloit Memorial in a make-up game from Tuesday at 5 p.m. today at Riverside Park.

-- Beloit 3, Craig 1—Three costly Janesville Craig throwing errors, and Kolin Hamilton’s two-run single in the bottom of the sixth inning lifted the host Purple Knights to a Big Eight Conference win.

Craig (1-2, 0-1) led 1-0 in the bottom of the sixth thanks to a strong start from right-hander Mike Davis, but Beloit rallied with three runs.

“We wasted a great start from Davis,” Craig coach Vic Herbst said. “But when you throw the ball around and don’t hit, you’re in trouble.

“Pitching was definitely the story today. Neither team did much offensively.”

The Cougars scored first when Austin Geller scored on a double steal as the Beloit catcher threw the ball into center field trying to throw Christian DeCremer out at second.

Craig hosts Lake Geneva Badger in a nonconference game at 4:30 Monday at Riverside Park. The Cougars’ conference game at Sun Prairie, which was postponed Tuesday and Wednesday, has been rescheduled for April 23.
