JANESVILLE Candidates elected to the Janesville City Council on Tuesday said jobs, economic development and poverty would be the biggest challenges facing the city in the next two years.
Incumbents Tom McDonald, 29, Yuri Rashkin, 34, and Kathy Voskuil, 50, defeated K. Andreah Briarmoon, 57, and Joe Hoppenjan, 48, in the election.
Voters also rejected a referendum in the Brodhead School District and two referendums in the Parkview School District.

B'moon's exposure has been predominantly positive. Naturally, she always speaks in her own favor on her weekly TV show. On radio, TV, and in the print media her lies are generally stated verbatim.
Yet, no real support.
And most of the people who voted for her have no idea of what she's like. Such votes are reactively oppositional and stem from a general feeling of discontent that have nothing to with the issues or nothing intelligently derived from the issues.

Re: wards or precincts: political bickering is minimized with at-large councilmembers, particularly in a city the size of Janesville. B'moon claims that at-large representation leaves an area like the Fourth Ward unfairly under-represented. However, Bill Truman, the current president of the council, is from the Fourth Ward. He is adamantly opposed to the demagogic screed of B'moon.
As for B'moon's lack of success: Exposure on radio, TV, and in the print media is gold in this society. B'moon has had much more of this exposure than any of the current councilmembers, yet the electorate continually rejects her. This rejection is a tribute to the intelligence of the Janesville electorate, including the Fourth Ward electorate.

There's quite a few people in this town I don't care much for. And if one of them happened to run for some sort of public office, I doubt I would waste my time incessantly blogging about them. But hey. If that's what floats your boats, more power to ya I guess.

Ms. Briarmoon made her opponents appear credible, sane, coherent, and reasonable when compared to the alternative. The best advice when running against her: make a healthy contribution to her campaign committee.

b'moonstone, project your distortion back onto yourself where it belongs.
Instead of insults, why don't you explain why she'd be a better choice than the three incumbents. And keep in mind that the reason no one else ran is because not very many people are willing to put up with a lunatic.
You either don't know anything about her or you're just as delusional as she is.

B'moon has no good ideas. She libels people. Everybody can see this. That's why she loses so badly.

I voted for people I dont like to vote against Briarmoon. Unlike some of you, I do know her personally, I do have specfic reasons why she is not the kind of person that I would trust in any position that would effect me or mine. My biggest complaint is the small field of candidates.

Alot of what Briarmoon says makes sense. Its the way she says it thats the problem.
If she would have learned to grease some palms,
slaps some backs and had any kind of skill as a politician she would be a force.Alas its not to be.

I would gather that 75% of Briarmoons votes are because people are pissed at one of the other candidates who were running. Do you really think there are 1,100 people in this town who support her. 500 is even pushing it.

Spunkmeyer, in my experience, those who are neutral on Briarmoon have never had close dealings with her. Of those who have, the takeaway is overwhelmingly negative. Ask around; the personal experiences tumble out.

Good points, GFan. Incidentally, until I saw Briarmoon's photo published, the numerous Gazette articles about her had me picturing her as the Old Cat Lady on "The Simpsons". :~D

I read the Gazette comments pretty much on a daily basis, and there are a LOT of complaints about the city council and their decisions on a number of issues. Funny to see that they were all re-elected. I'm curious...all of you who constantly complain about the city council and their actions - did you vote?

Thanks for that explanation, MikeF. It seems rather unusual for a city the size of Janesville to be structured that way, especially considering how even the tiniest burgs are separated into districts. Just off the top of my head, I tend to agree that it has had a positive effect on Janesville's development. As an outsider, Janesville has always seemed more "homogeneous" that most every other town its size; even many smaller towns. Now that makes perfect sense.

fool_on_the_hill- No, Janesville has 7 council members that represent the city as a whole. An effort was brought forward back in 2004 to change to alderman districts and it was soundly defeated by a 2-1 margin. As an example where districts do not work, Evansville comes to mind. I remember a few years back when one resigned and no one applied for the position. There were several qualified people, but they did not live in the right district. Similar thing happened at the county board level around the same time in an area of Janesville just west of the downtown.
I am a firm believer that the current at-large representation works in Janesville because it forces the council members and candidates to address what is best for the city as a whole rather than what is best for their neighborhood. Janesville isn't that large and segmented...yet.

So, the city of Janesville doesn't have precincts or wards, where residents vote exclusively for their own city council representative?
