Janesville Craig falters in final inning
Waunakee scored four runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to spoil Janesville Craig’s softball opener.
Leading 5-2 in the seventh, the Cougars surrendered the four runs with two outs en route to a 6-5 nonconference loss.
Despite the defeat, Craig High coach Dan Bayreuther was pleased with his team’s performance.
“For the first game out, we played pretty well,” Bayreuther said. “We got two outs in the seventh with their No. 8 hitter up to bat, but then they got a couple of bunt hits to get things started.
“It’s a tough one to lose, but we did some things well. Hopefully, we can build off that.”
The Cougars took a 3-1 lead in the third on Lindsey Oliver’s RBI single.
Leigh Grall and Stephanie Kalish had two hits each for the Cougars.
Craig hosts Fort Atkinson at 10 a.m. and Milton at noon Saturday at Dawson Field.
