— A 19-year-old Beloit man was safely taken into custody Friday morning after threatening to jump off the Newark Road Bridge into the Rock River 75 feet below, according to a press release from the Rock County Sheriff’s Office.

Jacob S. Dummer, 19, told Sgt. David Dransfield of the town of Beloit Police Department he had nothing to live for as he sat on the bridge railing, according to a department press release.

Beloit Township Fire Department and the Rock County Sheriff’s Office activated their water rescue and dive teams while officers negotiated with Dummer, the sheriff’s office release said.

Crews from the sheriff’s office, Beloit Township and city of Beloit police departments plus Beloit Township Fire Department responded to the scene at 2:09 a.m., according to the release.

Dummer was taken into custody about an hour later and transported to Beloit Memorial Hospital for examination and evaluation. After he was cleared, he was being held on an emergency detention, according to Beloit Township police.

Alcohol appears to be a factor in the incident, the sheriff’s office release said.
