— The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources on Wednesday approved an expansion for Rock County’s largest dairy farm.

The department reissued a pollutant discharge elimination system permit, which essentially is the state’s operating permit for large livestock operations.

The farm in Magnolia Township in far western Rock County houses 1,400 cows, 900 heifers and 275 calves. Those animals add up to 2,920 animal units using DNR standards.

After the expansion, the farm would manage 5,580 animal units, according to DNR data. The permit will expire in March 2015.

The last public hearing on the expansion took place in Albany in early March.

The Magnolia Town Board in December approved a conditional-use permit for the application.

A farm spokesman at the time said the town’s conditions are too strict.

The Wisconsin Court of Appeals already is reviewing conditions the town set in 2007 on a previous application.

The town and the farm have been legally at odds since 2002.
