Jefferson High’s 244-yard ground game and big second half did a number on McFarland in Rock Valley football Friday night.

The Eagles rallied from a 6-0 halftime deficit to sting the Spartans, 21-12, and leave McFarland with its first conference loss in 10 games since joining the Rock Valley last year.

Jefferson’s victory also lifted the Eagles (4-1) into a first-place tie with McFarland (4-1) and Edgerton at 2-1 in the Rock Valley North.

McFaland stunned the Eagles, however, when Blake Peterson returned a pass interception 49 yards to the Jefferson 7 with 12 seconds left in the half. Tyler Wedel threw a TD pass to Kyle Komplin on the next play to give the Spartans their halftime lead.

The Spartans fumbled, though, on the first play of the second half. Jefferson got the ball at the McFarland 36 and scored four plays later on Pete Linse’s 5-yard run. Tyler Tomczak’s extra point then gave the Eagles the lead for good at 7-6 with 10:41 left in the third quarter.

Jefferson also went 70 yards in six plays on its next possession, with Linse scoring on a 12-yard run as the Eagles led 14-6 with 6:06 left in the third quarter.

After Spartans failed on a game-tying two-point conversion with 5:53 left in the game, Jefferson pulled away from a 14-12 edge with a 11-play drive. Linse got his third touchdown on a 4-yard run in the final two minutes.

Linse finished 17 carries for 98 yards.
