Victories by Janesville Craig’s No. 1 and No. 3 doubles teams were the lone highlights of the Cougars’ 5-2 loss to Verona on Wednesday.

Craig finished with a 4-5 record in the Big Eight.

Hailey Smith and Taylor Storbakken raised their record at No. 1 singles to 8-1 in the conference and 16-2 overall with a 6-0, 7-5 victory over Jordan Langer and Grace Davenport.

“The Verona team was the only other one to lose to Madison West,” Craig coach Camilla Owen said. “Hailey and Taylor played the first set flawlessly. The other team woke up in the second set a bit, but they pulled it out at the end.”

Smith and Storbakken will be the No. 2 seed in No. 1 doubles at the Big Eight Conference Tournament on Saturday at the Nielsen Tennis Center in Madison. The West team will be No. 1 and the Verona team No. 3.

Craig’s No. 3 doubles team of Ciarra Sroda and Mina Liza Shahlapour earned the No. 1 seed in the conference tournament by completing their undefeated run through the Big Eight season. Sroda and Shahlapour went to 9-0 in the Big Eight and 16-1 overall with a 7-5, 6-0 victory.
