Teachers to fill Edison post
JANESVILLE Two veteran teachers will take the place of an assistant principal at Edison Middle School this year. The Janesville School Board approved the plan at it meeting Tuesday.
Steve Pease and Sid Larson will be co-deans of students until a new Edison principal is named.
Assistant principal Jim LeMire is filling in as interim principal until a permanent principal can be hired. LeMire was named interim principal after a search process this summer failed to find a satisfactory candidate.
The assistant principal deals mostly with student discipline. Pease is a learning-support teacher. Larson is a reading-and-writing specialist.
"Both individuals have demonstrated in the past their abilities to provide service and leadership in the absence of the principal or the assistant principal," according to a memo to the board from Steve Sperry, director of administrative and human services.
Both men have master's degrees and either have or are close to getting an administrator's license, Sperry told the board.
Pease and Larson will be paid to work beyond their normal hours and days. Each would be paid $11,365 extra if they continue with the added duties the entire school year or less if a new principal is named during the year.
Benefits also would cost more, so the maximum extra cost to the district would be $27,129 for both deans, according to Sperry's memo. The cost of an assistant principal's pay and benefits for a year is $118,351.
Board member Bill Sodemann suggested that if the arrangement works well, a similar arrangement should be considered for the other middle schools as a money-saving measure.

As a parent, I want someone at the middle school dedicated to student discipline and other issues. The two deans of students are certainly qualified, willing and able to do these duties, but they have other duties as well. Students have needs, and cost-cutting measures aren't going to make these needs go away.

Bill might think this is a great idea but I wonder if at the end of the year anyone else would be willing to be an assistant pricipal for $11k when you can make 6 figures doing that job.
.
Bill might want to realize that these two individuals might be doing this to boost their resumes for an assistant pricipal job, not because this is or was their dream senerio.
.
I don't think 11 k for an administrators role is a good idea for the future. The turnover would be just crazy.

Obviously LeMire is being given the opportunity to prove himself and may yet get the permanent job. (I don't know whether he was part of the previous round of applicants, though.)

"Benefits also would cost more..." Doesn't anyone question why the benefits cost more? This shows that administrators do have better benefits than teachers. Why?

If LeMire is good enough to be the interim principal, why not just give him the job. After all, he knows the system, kids, parents, et.al. The same holds true with the two who are acting the roles of ass't principal. Make a decision B.O.E. or are you going to waste another $20K doing a national search?
