— Three men from northern Wisconsin were arrested at a convenience store near Janesville on Tuesday after sheriff’s deputies found all of them in possession of brass knuckles.

Deputies were alerted by a customer at the Kwik Trip, 3123 S. Highway 51, that a man was sleeping in the back seat of a vehicle with a dog, and a handgun could be seen on a front seat.

Deputies investigated around 8:30 a.m. Tuesday and arrested three men who were traveling in the vehicle:

-- Christopher A. Benz, 27, of Hixton, on charges of felon in possession of a firearm, carrying a concealed weapon, possession of drug paraphernalia and a probation violation. Deputies report confiscating a pot pipe and a loaded 9mm semiautomatic handgun.

-- Carl E. Hansen, 40, of Hixton, on a charge of carrying a concealed weapon.

-- Bucky J. Ewers, 33, of Black River Falls, who had been sleeping in the back seat, was arrested on charges of carrying a concealed weapon and receiving stolen property.

Deputies found license plates in the car that had been taken from the garage of a Janesville woman.

The men were held at the Rock County Jail with court hearings scheduled on Thursday.

The case remains under investigation.

They stole license plates and had a loaded gun. Can you say drive-by? Thank you to the Sheriff's Department. So nice to hear that a crime was prevented, instead of the aftermath!

According to court records, one of the men is a long time Janesville resident who has apparently chosen to spread his criminal joy to black River Falls.

bullysarebest: The zero tolerance people running the school district obviously do not follow your logic. In their eyes a non-functional, gun-shaped key chain is a weapon and is NOT allowed. According to your logic a pencil is a weapon if somebody purchases it with the intent to cause violence. What if they purchase a pencil to write a love letter and then cause violence? Is it only a weapon if the eraser is actually used to "rub somebody out"?

wesgonsin: I agree completely.

Garyprimer -

Would you please explain what Janesville has to offer so it could be considered a vacation destination? Parks? Bars? Tallman House? Cookie-cutter retail? I love my hometown, but come on, you can't be serious. Janesville is considered a pit-stop and that's only because of the interstate on the north side.

"loaded 9mm semiautomatic handgun"
And brass knuckles stole the headline?

The bottom line is, this trio needed to be stopped (arrested) so the sheriff's deputies could figure out what they were up to. The fact that they had a gun on the seat was enough to cause suspicion. There is ALWAYS an excuse to arrest someone. The brass knuckles were as good of an excuse as any to interrupt the road trip these guys were on and then find out if they were up to no good. Turns out, they were up to no good. Thank you Sheriff's dept, fine job, our community is safer.

The difference is that brass knuckles are obtained for the sole purpose of causing violence. And pen, a screwdriver etc are not. Yes, those things can be used as a weapon but that is not their main purpose. Don't be obtuse it only makes you appear, well, obtuse!! :o)

Vatoloco & digriz: WTF? Are you both high? One is a weapon used to hurt someone. The pen etc... are not. They had loaded guns in the car stolen plates and on and on.

vatoloco, you must be the type to have a crow bar under your seat too. I suppose the loaded 9mm doeas not show they were up to no good either huh. Stolen plates? Hmmm maybe they could of murdered someone with the 9mm beat someone up with the knuckles and all while rocking the stolen plates but the knuckles are just a chance? Blah.. They are considered a weapon and you logging onto a blog for an argument shows your just so intelligent.

vatoloco: are you defending these guys? my bad if your not but kinda sounds like you are? These 3 works of art people had a gun, drug tools, brass knuckles, stolen plates and at least one was a felon .... I think these people might be a bit unstable don't you? I'd say anyone who would defend these 3 winners might be a bit unstable also ... my though.

Another example of why Janesville should be re-named to "North Beloit"

Digriz-What do these folks not understand?

OK. Here it goes again. If I carry scissors, a paint scraper, a screwdriver, or even an ice pick hidden in my pocket how are these items not as dangerous as brass knuckles?

People hurt people, brass knuckles don't hurt people. It's all about the emotional stability of that person carrying them.

I just left Hixton, and I always thought it was west-central wisconsin. Oh, that's right, Newville is considered northern Wisconsin.

I agree with Gary. Instead of RCSO showing up we needed the welcoming comittee and marching bands to greet them. More tourist = more money.

If Janesville wants to become a vacation destination, it needs to become more tourist-friendly. ;-)
