Madison West flexed its girls tennis muscles and defeated Janesville Craig, 6-1, in a Big Eight Conference match Thursday at West.

Craig High coach Camilla Owen was realistic going into the match.

“(No. 1 singles) Rachel Margolis is one of the top four players in the state, and (No. 2 singles) Samantha Nagin is probably in the next four,” Owen said. “They’ll do well at state and (West) is going to be the conference champion.”

The Regents’ No. 1 doubles team of Allie Dyer and Jenni Mohoney handed Craig’s Hailey Smith and Taylor Storbakken their first loss of the season in three sets, 6-7 (6-8), 6-0, 6-1. Smith and Storbakken are 13-1.

Craig’s Ciarra Sroda and Mina Liza Shahlapour remained undefeated at No. 3 doubles by winning a three-set match. Sroda and Shahlapour are 13-0.

The Cougars play in a Brookfield East tournament Saturday and close the Big Eight dual season against Verona at home Tuesday.
