Verona blanks Fort, repeats as champion
VERONA Five errors and the right arm of Matt Niffenegger spoiled the Fort Atkinson Generals’ final game of the Home Talent League round-robin postseason tournament.
Niffenegger scattered four hits over 8-plus innings, and Verona capitalized on a six-run third inning en route to a 9-0 win over Fort Atkinson.
With the victory, Verona finished 3-0 in the round-robin tournament and won the HTL title for the second straight year. Fort Atkinson went 0-3 in the tournament but still finished the season with an impressive 15-6 record.
“We struggled the whole playoffs and didn’t play our game today, but give Niffenegger credit, he pitched a very smart game,” said Fort Atkinson manager Jim Roethel. “We’re a young team, and the kids have a lot to be proud of.”
-- Cross Plains 3, Monona 2—Despite leaving 19 runners on base, Cross Plains held on for the win and finished second in the postseason tournament.
Monona was 1-2 to finish third.
