Middleton High’s football team made a huge statement Friday night.


The Cardinals rebounded from last week’s loss to Madison West to manhandle previously Verona, 26-0, on the Wildcats’ field in a battle of last year’s Big Eight Conference co-champions.


Both teams are 2-1 in the league, a game behind Janesville Parker.


Jamie Hofer gave the Cardinals a 7-0 led with a 53-yard scoring run in the first quarter. Hofer finished with 188 yards rushing on 30 carries, including a 9-yard scoring run in the fourth quarter.


Verona was hurt by four lost fumbles.

n Memorial 22, Sun Prairie 14—Madison Memorial held the host Cardinals scoreless in the first half en route to a 22-0 lead in a battle of contenders that left both teams at 2-1 in the Big Eight.


Jordan Fredrick returned an interception 59 yards for Memorial’s first touchdown. Keith Larson added 45-yard TD run, and Lechein Neblett caught a 25-yard TD pass from Mike Moss to give Memorial its first-half lead.


Larson gained 102 yards on 20 carries, while Moss passed for 197 yards, completing 23 of 48 passes and two interceptions.


Sun Prairie played without Sean Marshall for the second straight game for displinary reasons.
