Waunakee dominates Milton
WAUNAKEE On a near-perfect night, Waunakee High School’s football team played a near-perfect game.
And after impressively winning a non-league game, billed as a battle between defending Badger Conference champions—Waunakee of the North and Milton of the South—the Warriors look poised to capture their 11th title in 12 years.
They certainly left Milton impressed in a 35-0 rout of the Red Hawks here Friday night.
The Warriors, ranked 6th in this week’s AP large-school poll, got touchdowns on their first three drives and did all their scoring in the first half of another decisive victory.
“They are a great football team, and they controlled the line of scrimmage,” Milton coach Jeff Bachinski said.
The home win was the 66th straight for Waunakee (2-0), which also shut out Milton last year, 41-0, and left the Red Hawks at 1-1 this season.
“It was a nice win, to beat a team like that,” Waunakee coach Pat Rice said. “Our kids felt that we had to show up and really kind of make a statement tonight.”
The misery for the Red Hawks started on the first play of the game with a fumble at their 33-yard line. Seven plays later, Kyle Acker scored the first of his four touchdowns from four yards out.
After Milton’s next series ended in four plays, Waunakee went 76 yards in five plays, capped by a 41-yard scamper up the sideline by Derek Straus.
Following a three-and-out on the next Milton series, Waunakee quarterback Trent Cummings connected on a 21-yard pass Austin Maly to set up a six-play, 67 yard drive. That ended with Acker’s 2-yard touchdown.
“We were able to run and throw on our terms,” Rice said. “I thought our execution was pretty good.”
Waunakee outgained Milton 331-34 in the first half and had 15 first downs to just one for the Red Hawks during that stretch. The Warriors also forced five turnovers overall, swiping three interceptions and recovering two fumbles.
“It was unfortunate that we could not move the ball on them,” Bachinski said. “But they are a great football team.”
