Union Grove High School’s football team balanced the books with Evansville in nonconference action Friday night.

After losing 34-33 in overtime to the Blue Devils last season, the Broncos got the winning kick this time in a 21-20 victory over visiting Evansville, leaving both teams at 1-1 for the season.

Evansville jumped to 14-0 lead in the first quarter, but it came down to a touchdown apiece in the final period as the teams broke away from a 14-14 tie.

Union Grove grabbed its first lead at 20-14 on Dan Vyvyan’s 14-yard touchdown run with 5:19 remaining. That capped a 56-yard drive, but Brett Epping’s extra-point kick that made it 21-14 proved to be decisive.

Evansville almost had the last and decisive word, however. The Blue Devils marched 66 yards by completing four of seven passes to score on junior quarterback Adam Stamm’s 6-yard run with 55 seconds remaining, but an attempt for a winning two-point conversion came up short.

Vyvyan finished 19 carries for 161 yards to lead Union Grove’s 232-yard ground game.
