Janesville Cougars win; Vikings lose soccer matches
Janesville Craig’s up-and-coming boys soccer team wasted no time getting its kicks in the Big Eight Conference.
Jesse Davila led the way Thursday night as Craig High began the Big Eight season with a 2-0 victory at Sun Prairie.
“It’s first time we won a conference opener in a long time,” Craig coach Charles Friedrich said. “It was a big victory of the kids, putting them on the right path. It’s been a progressive rebuilding season, and it’s starting to come into form.’’
Davila helped see to that with his 1-2 offensive punch in the first half.
“Jesse had several one-on-one tries, and the third one was the charm,’’ Friedrich said. “It was a perfectly placed ball by Matt.”
That would be Matt Pechnik, whose assist set up Davila for the first goal at the 27-minute mark. Davila’s second goal came at 37 minutes on an assist from Mo McCrone.
“Jesse took a cross-pass from Mo on a header,” Friedrich said, “and it was just unstoppable.’’
Meanwhile, Craig goalkeep Max Niedermeier stopped everything from the Cardinals.
Craig (2-0-1) returns to action Saturday in the Sauk Prairie Invitational. The Cougars play Green Bay Southwest at 11:15 a.m. and Sauk Prairie at 1 p.m.

Just one question for coach Holmes....
Why would you make such a comment to the media?
Aren't you smart enough to realize how that statement affects the players that were smart enough to not get suspended?
Perhaps you should apply for the JV Pom coaching position?
Or maybe apply at Hooters?

Hopefully the 5 or 6 kids who are back for Parker play a little cleaner than those who played Thursday night. Lots of late tackles and many from behind. I am pretty sure one of the Beloit players suffered a broken nose because of the rough play from the Vikings.

Yes, Craig was 2-0 to start the conference season and also beat Madison Memorial to start 3-1 in the conference after 4 games. They went on to finish 3-5-1 in the conference. The Gazette should check the stats that are quoted before printing them because apparently the coach doesn't know them. Madisonsoccercentral.com has all the information, Gazette/Coach.

It is unfortunate that Coach Holmes seems to be throwing the kids who actually played under the bus. Every team goes through struggling times with grades, vacations, etc. I am sure the 6 starters would have helped, but 10 goals worth? Probably not. Beloit was without a few kids as well. Maybe Coach Holmes should give credit where credit is due. The Beloit kids were simply better last evening.

Is anyone else tired of hearing how they are missing five starters and can't wait to get them back? Seems to me that the kids who are academically ineligible should have thought of how their actions would effect their team and worked a bit harder in their classes last spring when they probably weren't involved in extracurriculars. What about all the kids who thought of the team, who study to get the grades, who work hard in practice and who give their best effort in every game? Should they not be acknowledged? Granted, last night's game wasn't pretty, Beloit outplayed us. Look at the number of saves Coach. The best defense is a good offense. Hang together kids, don't give up, your day will come.

Didn't Craig beat Sun Prairie 3-0 in the conference opener last year?
