WCLO's Steve Benton reports the trend in traffic deaths is lower in Rock County so far this year

RSS

— The Rock County Sheriff's Office is happy with a developing trend in highway deaths so far this year.

Capt. Jude Maurer says from January through August, there were four fatal accidents reported in the county. That compares to nine in the same period last year. That's a significant reduction of over 50%.

Maurer can't attribute the lower numbers to anything specific, but says he hopes the number of, grant funded, special programs are at least partially responsible. The programs include accident reduction efforts, speed enforcement, and impaired driving crackdowns.

He says they've applied for the same grants for 2010 and indications are they'll be getting them.
