Janesville's school bus drivers have a new duty: making sure students are buckled up.

Nancy Sonntag, school bus manager with Van Galder Bus Company, says the drivers of the two buses with seat belts used on routes reported no problems on the first day of school. If students refuse to buckle up, drivers will keep the bus stationary until the students are buckled, and then write up a misconduct report if the students still refuse to comply. The misconduct report is sent to the school district for disciplinary purposes.

Janesville is the first school district in the state to install seat belts on school buses. Two of the five with seat belts are used on school routes and three are used for out of town charter trips like sports competitions and field trips.

Each new school bus in the district will have seat belts installed.

It's about time! This should also make it easier for the driver - no kids hopping around from seat to seat.
